Charity Begins at Home

Over the past years Dinaledi has supported the following initiatives in the various locations where we have held our Champ of Champs events.

Ukuvikela Day Care Centre

Dinaledi Golf Society (DGS) has over the years contributed in assisting a number of NGOs on a once off basis. In 2014, DGS resolved to adopt Ukuvikela Day Care Centre (UDCC) on a long term basis in order to make impact.  Ukuvikela Day Care exists to provide a safe,  comfortable and developmentally appropriate environment for  preschoolers. Their focus is to provide quality child day care services benefiting the child, the parents, the staff and the community. They also provide much needed Early Childhood Development (ECD) education for children who may otherwise not have the opportunity to access such training, which is considered to be essential in preparing them for formal education. Their goal is to foster an environment for children in which they will receive care, attention, a space to be a child and a daily meal.

UDCC is based at Weiler’s Farm, Kanana Park, Kwa Majazana, in an under-developed and under-serviced part of Gauteng Province, close to Orange Farm.

Presently, the UDCC is assisted by parents who can afford to pay between R20 to R50 per month for services. This contribution helps towards feeding the children a basic diet and at least one meal a day. Ms. Ntlangwini and two volunteers form a highly committed and dedicated team and continue to provide a safe space for children despite the many challenges this community faces.

Today, DGS has made contribution towards carrying the following work:

–          Fitting the ceiling

–          Electrical installations and upgrades were done

–          The leaking roofs in the classrooms were repaired

The immediate needs of UDCC that DGS is focusing on in 2016 are:

–          Erect two toilets (boys/girls)

–          Built in cupboards/shelves in the classrooms and sick bay

–          Astroturf

–          Sponge mattresses

–          Educational toys and equipment

–          Acquisition of land and building a permanent concrete structure that can be used as a proper center

We endeavour to make 2016 that DGS changes the lives of children of UDCC.

The following are the past projects that DGS has worked on albeit on a once off basis:

  1. Leka Gape

This is an NGO based in Phalaborwa that looks after the hungry and the destitute, care for the sick and the infirm and look after the orphans and the elderly. This organisation sustains itself through selling handcrafts made by the community. Donations included clothes, T-shirts and beverages from the Dinaledi members and Coca Cola SA. Various handcrafted items were also purchased from this association as another form of support. This initiative was undertaken with the assistance of the Hans Merensky Golf Resort.

  1. Siyakha Hospice

This shelter provides a home for abandoned babies in the area. These babies’ ages ranged from 2 years and above. The needs of the centre were for Nutritional food and clothing for the babies. The other major need was the upgrading of the sleeping facilities. Dinaledi donated clothing, beverages and funds to upgrade the building. Support was also received for the verification of the medicines at the facility and advised on the relevant requirements for keeping medication that were safe. Several medicines had to be discarded as these were found to have been past their expiry dates.

  1. Siyabona Trust & Creative Learning Trust

This organisation has a comprehensive development programme in rural marginalised communities on the South Coast. It works through partnerships with the community to mobilize youth resources to develop positive living conditions and life skills, helps those affected by HIV, and provides skills training that improves living conditions and generate income. With the generosity and support of the Selbourne Resort Hotel we raised enough funds to assist with the building and extensions of the shelter for the trust. Other assistance included the supply of reading books for children and t-shirts from Eskom. Clothing and other items were also supplied by the Dinaledi members.

  1. Pholani Home Based Care

This shelter is in Mpumalanga. The NGO is involved with the HIV/Aids programs in the Hazyview/Sabie area. It provides support for those affected by the epidemic and also in the education and awareness campaigns in the area. A donation of clothing and other items was handed over to the representatives of the organisation.

  1. Tholimpilo

“Tholimpilo” an NGO based not far from Champagne Sport Resort in the Drakensburg in KZN. Donations were made in order to assist to run the Home and Crèche successfully.
